Active Directory Health Check Script

Based on the original work by Jeff Wouters

This script can be run remotely.

Please refer to the ReadMe file and help text for additional information.

This script requires PowerShell V3.

*****This script runs best on PowerShell Version 5*****

Scripts and Other Utilities

All downloads are currently being transitioned from ShareFile to GitHub and Dropbox.

All current documentation scripts require PowerShell Version 3 or later and create a Microsoft Word 2010, 2013, or 2016/2019/Word O365 document.

Most documentation scripts will also create formatted text and HTML output, so Microsoft Word is not required.

*****All scripts perform best with PowerShell Version 5*****

The scripts that create Word or PDF output DO NOT work with PowerShell versions later than 5.1.

Each documentation script has up to seven parts:

  1. ReadMe file
  2. Change Log
  3. Unsigned script with PS1 extension
  4. Unsigned script with TXT extension
  5. Signed script with PS1 extension
  6. Signed script with TXT extension
  7. Sample Software Exclusions file with TXT extension (XenApp 6.x & StoreFront scripts only)

Founding guidelines for all checks in this script:
*) Must work for all domains in a forest tree.
*) Must work without module dependencies, except for the PowerShell core modules.
*) Must work without Administrator privileges.

PDF – Norway CUGtech Host 2016 Presentation

Greetings,

I keep meaning to post this but never do. Here is a link to the PDF from the two sessions I gave for the awesome Norway Citrix User Group (CUG). If you ever get invited to speak to this amazing group, do not turn down the offer. The group treats its guest speakers like royalty. Even though most of the sessions are in Norwegian, most of us attend events like this for the networking (and for some of you, the alcohol). I was initially scheduled to deliver these two sessions at their spring event, but United Airlines did their best to keep me away, and they won. The Norway CUG was generous enough to invite me to speak at their Fall event. This time, United Airlines cooperated, and I made it to Oslo.

Side note: If you ever have the chance to visit Oslo or Norway, please do. The country, people, and food are wonderful. Norwegians speak better English than most Americans do. The Norwegians I met on this trip and on a previous trip were very polite and helpful. Everyone was helpful to this country boy who is not familiar with buses or trains or buying tickets for public transportation.,

I gave back-to-back sessions. The first was 10 Things in AD talk, updated for 2016, and then (re)Building Your Active Directory. The PDF combines both slide decks.

Those who attended my session came away with the following information:
Domain and Forest Functional Levels
Sites and Services: Global Catalog
Sites and Services: Connection Objects
Sites and Services: Subnets
DNS Reverse Lookup Zones
Duplicate DNS Entries
Orphaned Domain Controllers
Authoritative Time Server
Domain Controller DNS IP Configuration Settings
Active Directory Design Guidelines
Who to ignore
Why a (re)design may be required
The options for a (re)design
The pros and cons of a (re)design
What items to consider
The mandatory requirements
And much more

I want to thank the following individuals for their assistance in compiling the information and verifying its accuracy.

Michael B. Smith, “Office Servers and Services” with a specialty in Exchange MVP, https://www.essential.exchange/blog/
Brian Desmond, Identity and Access Management MVP, http://BrianDesmond.com
